Getting your first internship can cause a lot of anxiety, the thought of getting a salary alone is enough to get you exited. Sometimes in your mind, you would have spent the money even before receiving it.
Especially those ones that want to buy phone, laptop, play station, jewelries, shoes at same time.
But there is so much you can't know about joining the workforce until you are in the system and we are here to let you know some of the things you might encounter.
1. Your energy is almost as important as your output.
Nobody likes bad energy, especially when they are trying to get things done. Be the reason why people want to come in daily, not the type that complains about the color of the secretary's skirt.
2. You will usually have to do more than your job description
Things are likely to come up that will require your skills or attention usually when someone is not on seat or probably you are better at doing it.
3. Work never ends at closing time.
This might not be a regular thing. Some days, work would be tedious and you just have to spend extra hours inother to make sure the job is completed that day, if possible you might decide not to go on breaks. It's up to you to figure out how to manage your time.
4. At some point, one of your older colleague would try to send you to buy boli and roasted yam with pepper source
Shut it down immediately. Managing relationship with your coworkers is very important. Relationship with some colleagues might be vital while some needs to be kept at arms length.
5. Who you know is nearly as important as what you know
Learn to build and maintain a relationship with the people you meet. The girl in the sales meeting today might help your life in 10 years. Shake hands and collect numbers.
6. You can't say goodbye to school...not yet
There are odds that the Bachelor's degree that got you your internship might be irrelevant like the "P" in "PSYCHO" in the next four years. Enroll for courses, read within and outside your field.
An internship could be your stepping stone to a fulfilling career. Find a great place to work and be as diligent as you can.
