Both the United States of America and United Kingdom has threatened to punish anyone found guilty of inciting violence or plotting to rig the forth coming election in February 2019.
The two country has come to pledge their commitment to ensuring a free and fair election in Nigeria in a statement issued by the embassy of the united states and British high commission Abuja saying, "the 2019 election is important not only for Nigerians but for the whole African continent"
This statement was made due to the agitation and desperation on politicians particularly on the 16 page letter article released by former president Olusegun Obasanjo which expressed his doubt and readiness of politicians to conduct a free and fair election.
According to the statement which was made available to PREMIUM TIMES through the communication unit of US embassy, the two countries has commended the political parties for signing the peace accord and urged all candidates to govern themselves within the law governing the election.
the U.S statement reads in part, " the United State government does not support any specific candidate or party in Nigerians coming election.the United States supports the Nigerian Democratic process itself. We support a genuinely, free, transparent and peaceful electoral process.
"We and other democratic nations would be paying close attention to the actions of individuals who would interfere in the democratic process or incite violence against the civilian population before, during and after the election, we would not hesitate to consider consequences including visa restrictions for those found wanting in election violence and under U.S immigration law certain violation may lead to restriction on family members.
the United Kingdom promised continued support for Nigerians Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to ensure a peaceful and credible election.
“Our monitors will in particular be looking out for any attempts to encourage or use violence to influence the elections, including on social media. We would like to remind all Nigerians that where the UK is aware of such attempts, this may have consequences for individuals. These could include their eligibility to travel to the UK, their ability to access UK based funds or lead to prosecution under international law.”
