Luka Modric won the 2018 Ballon d’Or ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, Antoine Griezmann, Lionel Messi and others,  see full list below.

While Messi and Ronaldo have each won the Ballon d’Or five times, Luka Modric became the first player not named Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the award since Kaka beat the pair to it 11 years ago.

There have been some reactions from football fans worldwide as to why Modric would win the award above Lionel Messi knowing fully well that Messi's performance this season should earn him the award.

Others reacted by saying the ballon d'or last night is the greatest injustice in football to have ever happened to Iniesta, sneidger and Xavi.

While many has reacted to the ranking, and asking why should Antonio Griezzman and Kylian Mbappe be placed above Lionel Messi, and asked FIFA what was the criteria used in getting their FIFA best player ranking this year.

Luka Modric who won the 2018 Ballon d’Or,  took home his third Champions League title in a row at Real Madrid before captaining Croatia to the World Cup final against all odds. Lionel Messi on the other hand failed to make the top three of the Ballon d’Or for the first time since 2007, finishing fifth in this year’s final vote.

The Croatian already took home FIFA’s award for The Best Male Player earlier this year.
